Part of the complete guide: How to find grants for a UK charity: the complete guide
Community groups in South West England are funded mainly by six county community foundations, the Wessex Water Foundation's funds that four of them administer, and the UK-wide lottery and trust programmes that reach the region. On 26 October 2026 OpenGrant listed 170 open, rolling and forthcoming schemes for charities and community groups in the South West, 33 of them specific to the region, with 35 closing in the next 30 days. Most community foundation grants are between £500 and £5,000.
The funding picture in the South West
The South West browse page showed 732 schemes from 126 funders on 26 October 2026, 50 of them specific to the region; the charities in the South West page narrowed that to 170 schemes from 80 funders, with 60 accepting rolling applications and a median stated maximum of £77,500. The region-specific schemes are almost all community foundation funds, which is why this guide is organised by foundation. The UK-wide schemes that reach the South West are covered in local and community grants in the UK.
Community foundations manage named funds for donors, companies, councils and energy developers, so each has a changing list of funds with their own rules. They publish their grants to 360Giving, which gives a reliable picture of what they actually give.

Wiltshire and Swindon
Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation, renamed from Wiltshire Community Foundation in 2026, administers the Wessex Water funds for Wiltshire and runs its own grants; no scheme record was listed on OpenGrant on 26 October 2026, so use its site directly.
The Wessex Water Foundation
The Wessex Water Foundation gives more than £500,000 a year through Somerset, Dorset, Quartet and Wiltshire and Swindon community foundations: a Community Fund of up to £4,000, an Environment Fund of up to £2,000 and the Avonmouth Area Community Fund. The Community Fund's 2026 round closed on 19 October 2026 and is expected back in September 2027; the Environment Fund is expected in spring 2027. How to apply to the Wessex Water Community Fund sets out the eligibility rules, which are the same at every foundation, and the success rates each one published.
UK-wide programmes that reach the region
The remaining 137 schemes on the charities page are national. The first to check is National Lottery Awards for All England, £300 to £20,000 with no deadline and a 16-week decision, open to constituted groups; see how to apply to Awards for All England. Garfield Weston Foundation accepts applications all year, typically up to £30,000 for a local capital project such as a village hall. Trusts with a South West focus can be found with the peers lookup, which shows which funders have published grants to organisations like yours.
Before you apply
Community foundations check the same things: a constitution, a bank account in the group's name, a year of accounts (or a start-up budget for new funds), a safeguarding policy where you work with children or vulnerable adults, and that you are based in their area. Grants without registered charity status explains how an unregistered group meets those tests. Check the closing time, which is often 10am, 11am, noon or 1pm rather than the end of the day, and use the November 2026 deadlines page to see the region's dated rounds beside the national ones.
