# OpenGrant public API

The public API needs no account or API key. It exposes matching grant counts and the same three complete example grants visible to free website visitors. Subscriber-only grant records, funder profiles and peer research are available in the paid web workspace and are not exposed by this API.

All errors return JSON with `error.code`, `error.message`, and a documentation URL. A temporary database failure returns HTTP 503 and `Retry-After: 60`.

The API uses major versions in its URL, currently `/api/v1`. We will announce a replacement and retirement date at least 90 days before removing a version or endpoint, with `Deprecation` and `Sunset` headers on affected responses during that notice period. V1 has no scheduled retirement.
